Having laughed every day for nearly four years now, I have felt such amazing physiological and psychological benefits – I am more confident, have more self-esteem and comfortable in my skin. I love making a difference in people’s lives. With my health, my depression is resolved – I now know I can laugh if I don’t feel happy. I have gone through 2 frozen shoulders – each time using Laughter Yoga for pain relief – they healed in half the time of usual cases. I have mild asthma, and Laughter helps clean out my lungs, socially I can easily talk to strangers with more confidence. I have a zest for life. I am living in the moment without worrying about the future.
I have made such wonderful connections and friendships through the Laughter Yoga community, each one adding and nourishing my life which I am so grateful.

I am originally from Hyderabad, India but currently live near Boston with my husband and two children. I am a fashion designer by profession and a Laughter Yogi in training. The first time I heard about LY was in the mid 90s when it had just started and was catching on. Although I was amused reading in news papers about groups of seniors getting together in city parks, laughing loudly and being silly, I did not think much about it other than a pastime for some retired seniors. But in early 2000s when I saw the character of Dr. Asthana in Munnabhai MBBS (an Indian super hit movie) , who practices LY to cope with his anger & work stress I realized for the first time that LY could have real benefits.

There was a time in my life when I experienced a lot of challenges in my personal life. From a joyful, optimistic person under the influence of trouble and stress I became more and more depressed, sad, I lacked energy and the will to live. Everyday activities were getting more and more difficult. The situation was threatening my health. I had to think about my children, who I only looked after.
It was 2013 when a laugh appeared on my way. The first workshop, and basically the first exercises were a surprise, I felt discomfort. Laugh at strangers without a reason? Hmmm, I felt stupid. After a few minutes of laughter, the feeling disappeared. Instead, I felt the unconditional joy I had dreamed of for a long time. Strangers laughed at me for the sake of joy. During the session, I felt my diaphragm’s work. My stomach worked very hard to support my breathing. After the session, I felt a surge of energy and good humor. I smiled to myself remembering exercises.

All of 24, I have a list of health conditions like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lyme Disease, Chronic Migraine, Fibromyalgia, Depression, Anxiety, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I had been homebound and quite isolated for eight years, but Laughter Yoga is one helped me to cope with my problems and learn to keep a positive mental attitude towards life.
I took up Laughter Yoga in 2018, and it almost immediately made me feel more energized and stronger. I became much happier and laughed more easily and more often, and my chronic pain became less intense. I formed friendships with the other people, and started to feel connected and a part of a community! Living like a recluse for many years, it was amazing for me to start making friends.
